Go for it!!

Remember the Road Runner? ACME mean anything to you? These two things came to mind when I saw this picture. It seems bad weather is pointed right at this island and if the Road Runner is there; well, he is GOING TO GET IT!! The Road Runner may have been the eternal optimist, but he winds up slammed in the end. Elijah must have felt like the Road Runner after Jezebel threatened him. Read this passage from 1 Kings to find out more.

1 Kings 19:1-18 WEB (R)
(1) Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
(2) Then Jezebel send a messenger to Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don't make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.
(3) When he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
(4) But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
(5) He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, Arise and eat.
(6) He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and laid down again.
(7) The angel of Yahweh came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.
(8) He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the Mount of God.
(9) He came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, and he said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah?
(10) He said, I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
(11) He said, Go forth, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh. Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake:
(12) and after the earthquake a fire; but Yahweh was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
(13) It was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, there came a voice to him, and said, What are you doing here, Elijah?
(14) He said, I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
(15) Yahweh said to him, Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when you come, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;
(16) and you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.
(17) It shall happen, that he who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha kill.
(18) Yet will I leave me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.


I like Elijah; a worker of miracles, a strong proponent of Yahweh and overall a real man's man. BUT, he had his limits; he was not without fear and doubt. In short, he was human! But God encouraged him, guided him and directed him. Elijah listened! No, the world is not out to get you; things happen, but with God on your side things happen! Wait, what's that noise? Sounded something like a beep, beep????? Go for it!!!!

'round the corner

This is a picture of Plumbago road. It is a dirt road (sand mostly)that exits onto old state road in Dade City. Since I can't see around the corner, I go very slow and continually look to the right to detect oncoming traffic. This road is a lot like life; you just have to be careful and watch where you are going. Consider this passage from the book of Matthew:

(31) "Therefore don't be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?'
(32) For the Gentiles seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
(33) But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
(34) Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day's own evil is sufficient.


Every time this year there are those who make predictions about what will happen in the next twelve months. All sorts of wild speculations abound. Most do not come true; although a few may. I already know what is going to happen this upcoming year; God has told me in verse 33. I am going to be taken care of; if there is something I really NEED, like food and shelter, God has been and always will be there. Oh, I still will wonder how HE will do it, but I know that HE will. Eventually, the future that lies around the next corner will take me to HIM, but so what; I will go to someplace better. Don't get me wrong, I still will look around the corner, but I won't be worrying about what's on the other side.

Rare

On the last day of 2009 there was a blue moon. No, the moon did not change color, but we did see two full moons in a month; something rare. How often this happens, I don't know, but perhaps the term rare will give us a clue. In the old testament, there is the story of something rare and although some of the important parts occurred at night, it had nothing to do with the moon. Read on to find out....


Daniel 2:1-24 WEB (R)
(1) In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.
(2) Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the enchanters, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.
(3) The king said to them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.
(4) Then spoke the Chaldeans to the king in the Syrian language, O king, live forever: tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.
(5) The king answered the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if you don't make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.
(6) But if you show the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor: therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.
(7) They answered the second time and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.
(8) The king answered, I know of a certainty that you would gain time, because you see the thing is gone from me.
(9) But if you don't make known to me the dream, there is but one law for you; for you have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, until the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.
(10) The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man on the earth who can show the king's matter, because no king, lord, or ruler, has asked such a thing of any magician, or enchanter, or Chaldean.
(11) It is a rare thing that the king requires, and there is no other who can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
(12) For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
(13) So the decree went forth, and the wise men were to be slain; and they sought Daniel and his companions to be slain.
(14) Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon;
(15) he answered Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so urgent from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
(16) Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would appoint him a time, and he would show the king the interpretation.
(17) Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
(18) that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
(19) Then was the secret revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
(20) Daniel answered, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.
(21) He changes the times and the seasons; he removes kings, and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding;
(22) he reveals the deep and secret things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.
(23) I thank you, and praise you, you God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we desired of you; for you have made known to us the king's matter.
(24) Therefore Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said thus to him: Don't destroy the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will show to the king the interpretation.


Daniel is one of my favorite Bible characters; he is in exile, but exactly where God wants him to be. And God gives him knowledge through dreams and visions in order to reveal HIS WILL. I enjoy the rare and unusual, like the Ripley's believe it or not because of its shock factor. Daniel's knowledge must have really shocked those around him as he told something he shouldn't have known. God has a way of making his will known in ways that would never occur to us, and even though dreams and revelations were rare, they still happened; you might say... once in a blue moon.

Be careful out there!

Today is the last day of the year! Wow, its almost gone!? I have been thinking a lot about all the things that have happened over the past twelve months and frankly it has not been one of my top ten years. But, so what? In this world we experience both good and bad things, so be happy anyway!!! But not TOO HAPPY! I know tonight is a night when a lot of people are out to carouse, get drunk and generally cut up. Who knows what will happen tonight, so be careful, you don't know what the future. Jesus talked a lot about the future and this passage is one of those times.

Luke 21:29-36 WEB (R)
(29) He told them a parable. "See the fig tree, and all the trees.
(30) When they are already budding, you see it and know by your own selves that the summer is already near.
(31) Even so you also, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near.
(32) Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things are accomplished.
(33) Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.
(34) "So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly.
(35) For it will come like a snare on all those who dwell on the surface of all the earth.
(36) Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man."


Recently, I saw one of those "then and now" picture collections for hill street blues police drama show. I was saddened to see that the robust looking Sergeant had died, but death does come upon us all. He will be remembered for his daily charge to his fellow police officers: "Be careful out there". For many of us, tonight will be a night to howl, but remember his words and "Be careful out there". Keep an eye out, you never know when judgment may come upon you!!!

Focused

How often do we just go about our daily lives, not thinking about it. We do the same generic things day after day; work, TV, meals, sleep. Day after day, the same thing over and over and over again. Then something happens; we get sick or divorced or something serious happens and everything changes. Life comes into perspective and suddenly everything takes on a new meaning. I like Paul because he seems always to have been in focus, always thinking of his service to the risen Christ. Paul says...

Philippians 3:1-14 WEB (R)
(1) Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe.
(2) Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision.
(3) For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh;
(4) though I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If any other man thinks that he has confidence in the flesh, I yet more:

(10) that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death;

(12) Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, if it is so that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus.
(13) Brothers, I don't regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,
(14) I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.


Meeting Jesus changed everything for Paul. From that time on he had a one track mind, a singular purpose bent on submitting to the will of GOD. Just like the man in the picture, it was obvious that he could think of nothing but what lay ahead of him. Today, I read about a woman and child who "died" during childbirth only to mysteriously come back to life again. The husband thought he had lost everything, but when she came back... WOW! It was like that for Paul and it can be like that for us as well; we just have to be focused.

Now that's Amazing!

Amazing! This is the French Rivera! Frankly, I don't know how this can happen, but I do have eyes and I do see snow. I really enjoy seeing things like this because it puts things in perspective; I am just a human being and that means that I will never to be understand EVERYTHING! Whoever wrote the following proverb (probably Solomon) admits to the same sort of problem and immediately I like him.


Proverbs 30:18-19 WEB (R)
(18) "There are three things which are too amazing for me, four which I don't understand:
(19) The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent on a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maiden.


First, this is exaggeration; there are more than four things that everyone of us do not understand. I will bet it is much more than five and probably many times that number. Secondly, just because something puzzles or amazes us now does not mean it will do so forever. Does the phrase "He can be taught" from the movie Aladdin mean anything to you? Last of all, God will show us what we really need to know and over time that knowledge will lead to wisdom to gain further understanding. Amazing; probably not forever... or at least until we get to heaven. One last verse from the Bible comes to mind.

Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.


If all this isn't enough, turn over to 2nd Corithians 12 and read the first ten verses. Now that's Amazing!

Bad taste

Its amazing how friends change your life; a few years ago, I wouldn't have even paid the slightest attention to this picture, but now, I think its the height of BAD TASTE. How could anyone be this obnoxious? Here is the tale of the Ammonites who made themselves odious to David, king of Israel.

2 Samuel 10:1-19 WEB (R)
(1) It happened after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.
(2) David said, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
(3) But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn't David sent his servants to you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
(4) So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
(5) When they told it to David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.
(6) When the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.
(7) When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men.
(8) The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

(10) The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.
(11) He said, If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.
(12) Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Yahweh do that which seems him good.
(13) So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
(14) When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
(15) When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.
(16) Hadadezer sent, and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.
(17) It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
(18) The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there.
(19) When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.


The Ammonites misinterpreted David's actions and treated his ambassadors badly. Because of that there were consequences. Ultimate they paid for their bad manners as most people will in the end. I really don't know if the Chinese restaurant in the picture ever lost business because of this sign, but I hope so. Besides, would you want to eat there, I wouldn't; with every bite of Chicken Chow Mien I would wonder if I was really eating chicken.
