WHAT IS THE MESSIAH TO BE LIKE ?
Reading: John 4:1-26 Song: "Some day"
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Last week we were introduced to the concept of "The Messiah".
B. Lets look at Jn 4:1-26.. with a different point of view! QUESTIONING!
C. Literally, The Messiah was known to be coming... even among Samaritans. HOW?
D. Lots of Old testament scriptures told them.
Look at some of them to gain insight into what The Messiah was to be like!
II. BODY
A THE MESSIAH IS A MAN WITH A CERTAIN "ATTITUDE"
1. An attitude of submissiveness Psa 31:5; Isa 53:1-12; psa 22
2. An attitude of Holiness Psa 16:10; 8-11
3. An attitude of Zeal Psa 69:9
4. An attitude of God's anointing Isa 11:2
(understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, fear)
B. THE MESSIAH IS A MAN WITH A MISSION.
1. To establish an everlasting kingdom Dan 7:13-14; Isa 2:1-4; Dan 2:31- 45;9:25-27
2. To rule from the throne of David Isa 9:7; Jere 23:5-6; psa 2:1-12
3. To rule over the Gentiles Hosea 1:10; Isa 49:6; Isa 11:10
4. To teach the covenant Jere 31:34; Isa 54:13;
5. To defeat death Isa 25:6-8; Psa 16:7-11
6. To be a Priest and a Prophet Psa 110:1-7
7. To redeem men Isa 59:20-21
8. To shepherd men Zech 13:7
C. THE MESSIAH IS A MAN WITH A MESSAGE.
1. A message like Moses (lawgiver) Dt 18:15, 18
2. A message of Justice Isa 42:1-4
3. A message of Law Isa 42:4
4. A message of salvation Zech 9:9
5. A message of Life Psa 16:8-11
6. A message of Good News Isa 61:1-3
III. CONCLUSION
A. It's not so surprising to see the woman at the well discussing The Messiah, the scriptures said much of Him.
B. It notable that I've quoted the Old Testament! This is what the 1st century Jew had available.
C. It (the scriptures) told them what to look for, what He would do and when He would come.
THEY WERE WAITING.... EXPECTANTLY!
D. It's a good question... Did Jesus fit the bill... that's next week.
