Am I a watchman? by Gary Rose

In my youth, I owned some “less than perfect” cars, well to be honest, some wrecks. Some held together by band-iron (for the rear springs) and one even with shoe laces (for the carburetor), but nothing this bad. The car in the picture looks like it can barely move, yet alone be driven safely.

Believe it or not, to me this car is not really the focal point of the picture; The woman is. I know that this may sound a little strange to you at first, but consider; she may be the last person to see this man alive. After all, driving this car COULD KILL HIM. Imagine if something DID HAPPEN TO HIM, how would she feel when she found out? That would depend on whether or not she warned him or not, wouldn’t it?

Recently, while reading the book of Ezekiel, I came across a passage which I think applies both to the woman in the picture and to us as well. The Bible says…

Ezekiel 33 ( World English Bible )

1 Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

2 Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman;

3 if, when he sees the sword come on the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;

4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and doesn’t take warning, if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be on his own head.

5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn’t take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul.

6 But if the watchman sees the sword come, and doesn’t blow the trumpet, and the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.

7 So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

8 When I tell the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at your hand.

9 Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.

What has this passage to do with us? Plenty, for Christians have been entrusted with The Gospel, which can lead a person to eternal life. If we don’t share this truth (somehow, someway) as we have opportunity- who will? In a way, we are like that “watchman” of old, Ezekiel. The question is: will we warn people of their spiritual fate if they don’t seek God and obey his will?

A car wreck is nothing when compared with eternal damnation for unforgiven sin, so share The Truth of The Gospel; perhaps some people will obey God and enjoy fellowship with HIM, FOREVER!

Today, ask yourself this question: Am I a “watchman” or not?
