Feeling groovey...

Today's post is more about feeling than anything else.  If I had to summarize my day, this would tell it all.  Spent some time with my oldest grand daughter, had a wonderful meal with my sister-in-law and watched some Sy-fi.  Good food, good company and fantasy.  Who could ask for more?  The only way it could be better would be if Jesus came back tonight.  For some reason, I feel very satisfied tonight.  I wonder if Paul felt this way when he penned these words so long ago...

WEB: II Timothy Chapter 4

[7] I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. [8] From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.

Okay, I am not Paul, but I am alive and live in this world just like him.  Jesus loves me, as he does everyone who really loves him, so how bad could life be?  Not really sure WHY I feel this way; maybe its closure with 2011 or something else, but when God puts this in your heart... well be happy about it and worry about absolutely nothing.  Being contented is a blessing and makes me feel young again.  Now, guess why I picked this picture....

Dimensions of reality

3D is a recent development in television.  If you have seen it, you already know that it simulates 3D and is not truly 3D.  After I watch a 3D show for awhile, my eyes bother me, so it is a rarity for me to do this anymore.  But, it is new and in a way, exciting, so, lately, more and more theater movies show this type.  People like something new and interesting and this has been true since people have been people.  Here is an example from the book of Acts...

WEB: Acts Chapter 17

[16] Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols. [17] So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him. [18] Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?”

Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

[19] They took hold of him, and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by you? [20] For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.” [21] Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

[22] Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus, and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things. [23] For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you. [24] The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, [25] neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things. [26] He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings, [27] that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. [28] ‘For in him we live, and move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’ [29] Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man. [30] The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent, [31] because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”

[32] Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We want to hear you again concerning this.”

[33] Thus Paul went out from among them. [34] But certain men joined with him, and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

There was a time when Christianity was new; when the world had untold multitudes of idol worshipers.  Athens was a city full of idolatry and it vexed Paul.  When he went to the Areopagus, some could hardly believe the truth that he told them, but others did.  Life is like that; some people are open to new things and others will not change no matter what.  I was attracted to the picture because it told me the truth; that real life is in 3D.  Christianity is real life; now and forever and while the message is not new anymore, yet its truth prevails.  Life as we know it has another dimension, a spiritual one and with Jesus that life will continue for ever and ever.  Now, if I could only find a way to put that little message on a flag, I would BE DOING SOMETHING REALLY NEW!!!

Caring

Okay, you don't have to be a genius to see what this picture is about!  Hint; it has nothing to do with what part of you is cold.  Rather, its about caring for others and not just yourself.  Jesus puts it this way...

WEB: Matthew Chapter 25

[31] “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. [32] Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. [33] He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. [34] Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; [35] for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. [36] I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

[37] “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? [38] When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’

[40] “The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ [41] Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; [42] for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; [43] I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

[44] “Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’

[45] “Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ [46] These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”"

Tough words, very tough indeed.  But, Jesus was like that; he just spoke plainly, yet powerfully.  Think others don't matter; think again!  To me, this passage speaks directly to Christians.  Do I care for those who love God?  Am I involved in their lives?  If not, why not?  Read the passage again, this time with a view to the consequences if you DON'T CARE.  It should scare you; if it doesn't read it again until it does.  You have more than your feet to worry about!!!

A perfect day

I will let you in on a little secret: I have always wanted a sailboat.  For years I have imagined the pleasure of being on the open water, the wind blowing in my face, with no daily pressures or deadlines.  Right now, I don't foresee this as ever happening.  I have no idea how I could possibly raise the funds necessary to do this or whether or not I am just too old to even try such a thing.  However, I can envision the peace and tranquility that this picture represents and realize that someday I will experience such joy... in heaven.  And here is why I know it...

WEB: Revelation of John Chapter 22

[1] He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, [2] in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. [3] There will be no curse any more. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants serve him. [4] They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. [5] There will be no night, and they need no lamp light; for the Lord God will illuminate them. They will reign forever and ever.

Eventually this scripture will become a reality for me and that is better than any sailboat or peaceful day that I could ever possibly imagine.  To be with Jesus is better than anything this world could possibly offer.; it will be a "dream come true".  When you know that your dreams will come true, nothing else really matters, even something you think that you have always wanted.  Besides, who knows if I might get seasick on the water...

The rest of the story

Paralysis in analysis seems to apply.  However, on a second look there seems to be some truth here.  Thoughtfulness, attention to detail and consideration for others as well as their direct opposites could be gleaned from how someone treats such an ordinary act.  The more I think about it, the more I like the analysis.  Its not just what you say in life; its what you do as well.  Which brings me to the book of Acts (the practices of the apostles of Jesus)...

WEB: Acts Chapter 1

[1] The first book I wrote, Theophilus, concerned all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, [2] until the day in which he was received up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. [3] To these he also showed himself alive after he suffered, by many proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days, and speaking about God’s Kingdom. [4] Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, "“Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me. [5] For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”"

[6] Therefore, when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

[7] He said to them, "“It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority. [8] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”"

[9] When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.

The "fishermen" of Jesus had been with Jesus for about two plus years.  They had watched him act in all sorts of situations and supposedly learned something.  Now, they were at a crossroads and it was their turn to act.  What they would do would say a great deal about them, just as what WE DO says a lot about US. What we have done in the past says a great deal about who we were, but what we are doing now and what we will do in the future is far more important.  So, take a lesson from the picture above, if you are less than considerate, change.  You may make your spouse happy.  Consider this... if you can change a simple thing like bathroom etiquette, then anything is possible.  Think it really doesn't matter?  These simple fishermen changed the world... and that is the rest of the story (in the book of Acts).

The color of "why"

Such color!!!  I have often wondered WHY we see in color?  I doubt if I will ever really know WHY, but I DO know that it enhances life.  This was brought to my attention yesterday, when my youngest granddaughter was opening her Christmas presents.  There was an abandonment of joy in her eyes as she went from one present to another and with each new wrapping her eyes opened wider.  Right then, if I had asked her what was so exciting, I doubt if she could have told me (after all, she is just TWO), but the joy of it all was beyond doubt.  So it must have been for the recipient of a very special gift from Jesus...

WEB: John Chapter 9

[1] As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. [2] His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

[3] Jesus answered, "“Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but, that the works of God might be revealed in him. [4] I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work. [5] While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”" [6] When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man’s eyes with the mud, [7] and said to him, "“Go, wash in the pool of Siloam”" (which means “Sent”). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing. [8] The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind before, said, “Isn’t this he who sat and begged?” [9] Others were saying, “It is he.” Still others were saying, “He looks like him.”

He said, “I am he.” [10] They therefore were asking him, “How were your eyes opened?”

[11] He answered, “A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, "‘Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash.’" So I went away and washed, and I received sight.”

[12] Then they asked him, “Where is he?”

He said, “I don’t know.”

[13] They brought him who had been blind to the Pharisees. [14] It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. [15] Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see.”

[16] Some therefore of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” There was division among them. [17] Therefore they asked the blind man again, “What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?”

He said, “He is a prophet.”

[18] The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight, [19] and asked them, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

[20] His parents answered them, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; [21] but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself.” [22] His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. [23] Therefore his parents said, “He is of age. Ask him.”

[24] So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

[25] He therefore answered, “I don’t know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

The Pharisees' perception of the situation was colored by their own preconceived ideas; they just didn't understand who Jesus was and what he was doing.  So, they investigated, reasoned and tried to manipulated the facts to their own purposes.  The former blind man just accepted the situation and let the facts speak for themselves.  Some will say that this is just a story, but really it is more than a mere recitation of events.  It is a revelation of faith and an example of someone who could see the truth and accept it.  Did the former blind man need to see in color?  No!  But what he saw he appreciated and flatly accepted for what it was.  Sounds like my granddaughter all over again!!!  Maybe we should all see things like small children; perhaps we would appreciate colors more and also the gift of life.  Got to go, but one thing... take another look at the picture and be happy, because God not only gave us sight, HE gave us color as well.

Up or down?

Just a picture of a balloon over a falls, but wait, is it going up or in the other direction?  I can't tell from the picture; can you?  Question: Have you ever felt like this?  Your life is in turmoil, you are totally confused and can't tell up from up or down.  What do you do next, where do you go?  Forgotten?  Well, here is a portion of the Scripture to remind you...

WEB: Mark Chapter 14

[27] Jesus said to them, "“All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ [28] However, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.”"

[29] But Peter said to him, “Although all will be offended, yet I will not.”

[30] Jesus said to him, "“Most certainly I tell you, that you today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”"

[31] But he spoke all the more, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” They all said the same thing.

[32] They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, "“Sit here, while I pray.”" [33] He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed. [34] He said to them, "“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch.”"

[35] He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him. [36] He said, "“Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”"

[37] He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "“Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you watch one hour? [38] Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”"

[39] Again he went away, and prayed, saying the same words. [40] Again he returned, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn’t know what to answer him. [41] He came the third time, and said to them, "“Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. [42] Arise, let us be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”"

[43] Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. [44] Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely.” [45] When he had come, immediately he came to him, and said, “Rabbi! Rabbi!” and kissed him. [46] They laid their hands on him, and seized him. [47] But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

[48] Jesus answered them, "“Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? [49] I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me. But this is so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”"

[50] They all left him, and fled.

Jesus had led his disciples for about three years; he was their undisputed leader and deservedly so.  They all go to Gethsemane to pray, but, for some reason the disciples keep falling asleep.  Judas and company enter the picture; the disciples flee.  History, just as Jesus had foretold.  History has been an interest of mine for several decades now and will continue to be for the foreseeable future!  Because of my interest in the Bible, ancient history seems of more interesting than current events, but frankly I like both.  I am not really sure why I find it interesting; perhaps it has something to do with predicting human behavior based on past examples, who knows?  Yet Jesus knew what his followers would do, BEFORE THEY DID IT!!!  They didn't know up from down, just like the balloon in the picture, but Jesus did.  Now we are getting somewhere... As I think about it, the Bible teaches about history in a different way... HIS story.  God saw the pitiful condition of man in his sin and worked out a way to make things right; through HIS son, History... got to love it!!!  Once you know it (or rather how God works) there is a overwhelming fascination in the simplicity of his complexity. Life isn't full of uncertainty, its comprised of serendipity!!!  Up, down, sideways or something else; it really doesn't matter... just as long as the creator of the universe is right there with you.  And that is good enough for me!!!

Measuring stupidity

Something unreasonable, something irritating, something that just makes you want to find out who made the rule and give them a piece of your mind.  When I saw this sign, I thought of the news I heard this week; that within the next year, more than 80 power plants will close all over America by the fiat of the EPA.  You know, "The environmental Persecution Authority" that makes any rule it can dream up to "change" our country.  What, do I sound bitter? The answer is a resounding "yes"!  As if we don't have enough problems in this country, lets reduce our electricity by 10% next year. This situation will hurt people; its almost like our rulers have it in for us.  Humm, I remember a portion of the Bible where a ruler actually did...

WEB: Exodus Chapter 1

[8] Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph. [9] He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. [10] Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies, and fight against us, and escape out of the land.” [11] Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses. [12] But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They were grieved because of the children of Israel. [13] The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve, [14] and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

[15] The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah, [16] and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool; if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” [17] But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive. [18] The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the boys alive?”

[19] The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

[20] God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty. [21] It happened, because the midwives feared God, that he gave them families. [22] Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Some edicts are just wrong.  You can't just exterminate people!  Remember Adolph Hitler???  Whether it is an edict like Pharaoh's or a regulation that hurts people, some things are just wrong, period!  Throughout history, there have been people whose conscience took precedence over their obedience and did what they considered to be the "right thing"!!!  Early Christians would not acknowledge Caesar as LORD and paid for it with their lives.  How could they, JESUS was their LORD!!!  Whenever possible, I believe we should obey our leaders, but there are limits.  In matters of life and death and conscience towards God (like the midwives in the passage from Exodus) we should obey God rather than men.  Besides, some rules are obviously wrong!  Question: How DO YOU MEASURE A HALF A MILE AN HOUR, ANYWAY?????

Sutffed with... what???

The holiday season is a tough time for some people.  When you have to face the reality of your own personal life against the idealized one portrayed in movies like "Its a wonderful life" or the "Miracle on 34th street" or a dozen other holiday films, it can get pretty depressing. So, while the picture is a bit exaggerated, the truth behind it is that many will resort to Prozac or other anti-depressants to make it through the next week or so.  And don't forget Alcohol, because its the drug of choice this time of year.  Instead of all this, why not do something different; read the book of Ephesians and consider that the things of true value are already awaiting you in the heavenly realms...

World English Bible: Ephesians Chapter 3

[1] For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles, [2] if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you; [3] how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words, [4] by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ; [5] which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit; [6] that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News, [7] of which I was made a servant, according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power. [8] To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, [9] and to make all men see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ; [10] to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places, [11] according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord; [12] in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him. [13] Therefore I ask that you may not lose heart at my troubles for you, which are your glory.

[14] For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, [15] from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, [16] that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; [17] that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, [18] may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, [19] and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. [20] Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, [21] to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

God has given to all us Gentiles hope and love.  Personally, in the form of Jesus and by association our brethren in the church.  This love is not just for the next few days, but is year-round.  The fancy word Ubiquitous really does apply!!!  God's love never stops or changes its mind, never gets bored with you or criticizes your waistline or your hair (or the lack of it).  God loves you and that is the idealized reality.  So, who needs chemical help when faced with this pleasant situation?  Maybe those who do not know Jesus?  In a few days you may actually be sitting down for a meal with some of them, so make an effort to be nice.  Who knows, they might understand God's love if they see it in you?  Try showing it to them, it couldn't hurt!!!

A bad day, a good day and a best day

Yesterday I had a really good day!!!  Surprising, because usually Tuesday's are shall we say "less than wonderful".  Linda and I went to the movies (New Twilight movie) with some friends, then to the Olive Garden in New Tampa and finally came home, watched TV and chatted.  Good movie, good food and pleasant company; who could ask for more?  Most days are not that good, (although they are much better, now that I am retired) and some are downright rotten.  Question: How do you tell a bad day from a really good one?  If you are the bird in the picture, the answer is simple, today you may die.  But what about the rest of us?  I wonder, what are some different types of days in the Bible?

"Bad day"

WEB: Matthew Chapter 27
[32] As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross. [33] They came to a place called “Golgotha,” that is to say, “The place of a skull.” [34] They gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink. [35] When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots, [36] and they sat and watched him there. [37] They set up over his head the accusation against him written, “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

"Good Day"

WEB: Matthew Chapter 28
[1] Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. [2] Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. [3] His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. [4] For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men. [5] The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified. [6] He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. [7] Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.”

[8] They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring his disciples word.

"Best Day"

WEB: I Thessalonians Chapter 4
[13] But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. [15] For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. [16] For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, [17] then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. [18] Therefore comfort one another with these words.

First of all, rating days is a matter of perspective.  What may seem to be bad today, may, in the long run prove really wonderful.  As an example, here is something that actually happened to me.  I was sixteen and playing soccer in gym class.  Two of us kicked the ball at the same time and my left knee went out of joint.  The pain was terrible and my left leg was wrapped like a mummy for almost nine months.  Yet, something good came from it; Linda carried my books for me, we went steady and eventually married (43 years so far).  Something bad became something good.  So, in our "bad day" example, Jesus is crucified.  Awful way to die.  You just don't get worse than that!!!  But, where would we be if Jesus had not died?  Without a remedy for our sin and that would be a really bad day for US!!!  So, bad means good for a follower of Jesus!  Not bad for a bad day!!!  Next, we have a "good day".  Not just a day filled with pleasantness (like yesterday) but a life changing, EARTH SHAKING EVENT!!!  Jesus rose from the grave!!!  God showed us that we can really have hope!!!  If Jesus can have life after death, so can we.  Now, that's a GOOD DAY!!!  Last, we have the "Best day".  Jesus comes again.  If we are still on the Earth when he comes again, we will actually see the things we have believed all our lives and be changed.  Our faith will be proven right before our eyes.  Now, that is the best day I can think of.  The little bird in the picture above is having a "bad day" because its facing a certain death and there is really no way out.  But, WE HAVE ONE and his name is Jesus!  So, I ask you: Can we ever really have a bad day?  Don't bother to answer, if you are a follower of Jesus, you already know the answer to that one!!!!!!!!!!

[6] “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

[7] “You shall have no other gods before me.

[8] “You shall not make an engraved image for yourself, any likeness of what is in heaven above, or what is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: [9] you shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them; for I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me; [10] and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

[11] “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain: for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

[12] “Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you. [13] You shall labor six days, and do all your work; [14] but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God, in which you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. [15] You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm: therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

[16] “Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

[17] “You shall not murder.

[18] “Neither shall you commit adultery.

[19] “Neither shall you steal.

[20] “Neither shall you give false testimony against your neighbor.

[21] “Neither shall you covet your neighbor’s wife; neither shall you desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Aside from missing a few things, our "hillbilly list" isn't bad at all.  Why?  Because of what it tries to do; namely, take a Biblical teaching and put it in the vernacular.  Something we can understand and apply to our daily lives.  Just as long as we understand this, we are fine.  Don't try to correct our reclining friend, appreciate his attitude and try to understand more of the Bible ourselves.  Now, on to the New Testament....

The backup plan

Reindeer sick, sleigh in the shop for repairs, go to your PLAN B.  Cute picture, good idea.  If one thing won't work, try another.  This applies to so many things in life, so why not make it a spiritual application as well.  Below are listed two plans; the first involves a set of rules to live by and if you can keep it perfectly... success!!! If not, then you are in big trouble; but fortunately there IS A BACKUP PLAN.  Carefully read both and pick the one that BEST SUITS YOU...

For many people, this is PLAN A

GO TO PLAN B

WEB: Galatians Chapter 3
[10] For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.” [11] Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.” [12] The law is not of faith, but, “The man who does them will live by them.” [13] Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” [14] that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

God is faithful to what he has said; if you can keep plan A perfectly, fine for you.  If you make one deviation; terrible consequences.  The GOOD NEWS is that Jesus Christ was sent for everyone who can't do plan A.  This is one of those cases that the alternate plan is better than the primary.  Jesus supplies what you can't be... perfect.  Why not read the second chapter of the book of Acts and find out the rest of the story?  There you go, end of story, except that I just wish Santa had a rocket powered Cadillac instead of that little scooter!!!  Who says that your backup plan should not be BETTER THAN YOUR PRIMARY!!!!

No way, no how, no matter what...

What defines stupidity?  Look at the picture; it will help you define it!!!  It amazes me what people do and why they do it.  What could possibly be going through the mind of the person on the tightrope?  More to the point, why do this at all???  When I think of stupidity, I think of this chapter from the book of Acts...

WEB: Acts Chapter 8

[9] But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who used to practice sorcery in the city, and amazed the people of Samaria, making himself out to be some great one, [10] to whom they all listened, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is that great power of God.” [11] They listened to him, because for a long time he had amazed them with his sorceries. [12] But when they believed Philip preaching good news concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. [13] Simon himself also believed. Being baptized, he continued with Philip. Seeing signs and great miracles occurring, he was amazed.

[14] Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, [15] who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; [16] for as yet he had fallen on none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of Christ Jesus. [17] Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. [18] Now when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, [19] saying, “Give me also this power, that whomever I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.” [20] But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! [21] You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart isn’t right before God. [22] Repent therefore of this, your wickedness, and ask God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.

Simon was used to being a "somebody".  People flocked to him as he performed his "magic".  Then, he saw the power the Apostles of Jesus could bestow and wanted it.  Why?  Probably because he wanted Power and attention, but who really knows?  Then, he did something really stupid; he tried to buy it from the Apostles.  Bad move, bad motives, even worse results.  He earned a rebuke and deservedly so.  Consider that God has made everything and because of this, it all belongs to him.  If HE already owns it, how could anyone think HE might accept human currency (whatever form it might take) in "payment"? Absurdity at its finest!!!  When I think of it, it just makes me shake my head in amazement.  That is one tightrope you couldn't get me on for anything under the sun. No way, no how, no matter what.  But then again, I am not naturally stupid.  Perhaps artificial intelligence is....

Family... got to love them... really!!!

Its that time of year again; family get-togethers, celebrations and of course, Christmas.  Thanksgiving and Christmas; two holidays that are MANDATORY for family.  It has always seemed odd to me that you get to pick your friends, but NOT YOUR FAMILY!!!   Friends are just that... friends; but family... well, face it, some of them may be less than wonderful.  Some may even be much worse than bad.  But, you get what you get and try to show solidarity with them all.  That is just the way it is because after all, they are FAMILY!!!  When I think of this time of year, naturally I think of passages such as the following...

WEB: Luke Chapter 2

[1] Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. [2] This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. [3] All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. [4] Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; [5] to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.

[6] It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth. [7] She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. [8] There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. [9] Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. [10] The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. [11] For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. [12] This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.” [13] Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,

[14] “Glory to God in the highest,
on earth peace, good will toward men.”

[15] It happened, when the angels went away from them into the sky, that the shepherds said one to another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” [16] They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough. [17] When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child. [18] All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. [19] But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. [20] The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.

[21] When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

[22] When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord [23] (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

[25] Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. [26] It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. [27] He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, [28] then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

[29] “Now you are releasing your servant, Master,
according to your word, in peace;

[30] for my eyes have seen your salvation,
[31] which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;

[32] a light for revelation to the nations,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

[33] Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him, [34] and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. [35] Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

We attend family celebrations, but Joseph and Mary were obeying a Roman edict when their first son was born.  But, this was not a normal situation; angels in heaven rejoiced, shepherds marveled and prophetic pronouncements were made about their new child.  How the parents must have wondered about the future of their newborn?  They must have asked themselves:"Why Us"?  I really don't know the answer to that question, except to say we don't get to pick our relations, God does.  So, in this holiday season, be happy with the family God has given you; meet with them...BE HAPPY!!!  Who knows, you may just discover something unexpected, something wonderful, about someone you have known all your life.  Surprise!!!

Your choice

Everyone wants freedom, but what kind?  Freedom from what?  Take your pick: work, taxes, responsibility, family or perhaps something like poverty or illness.  No matter who you are or where you live you will encounter one or more of these limiting factors.  Put several of them together and they will dictate how you live.  In America we think we are free, but we are not.  We are hemmed in on every side by rules, regulations, taxes and a political system that is so perverted from its original design as to be a joke.  Well, at least I have religious freedom... think again.  Government is encroaching on that as well.  Or is it...

WEB: Galatians 5:1
Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Some things are just between you and God.  Only he knows what you really think about all day long.  Only he knows why you do the things you do.  Unless the government suddenly learns how to read your thoughts (this may someday be possible) you will always have some privacy.  In one sense we all dictate who will govern us and hopefully it will be God.  Better than any Earthly system of government, God loves us and if he controls our hearts we have a chance at true liberty and that is a shining accomplishment indeed.

World English Bible: Judges Chapter 19

[1] It happened in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah. [2] His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months. [3] Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. [4] His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.

[5] It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.” [6] So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.” [7] The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again. [8] He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;” and they both ate.

[9] When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.” [10] But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.

[11] When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.”

[12] His master said to him, “We won’t turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.” [13] He said to his servant, “Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.” [14] So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin. [15] They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.

[16] Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites. [17] He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

[18] He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house. [19] Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything.”

[20] The old man said, “Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don’t lodge in the street.” [21] So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink. [22] As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!”

[23] The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly. [24] Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”

[28] He said to her, “Get up, and let us be going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.

[29] When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel. [30] It was so, that all who saw it said, “There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”

This story is important for several reasons.  First the death of this concubine ultimately led to almost a total eradication of one of the tribes of Israel.  Second, it shows a great perversion; that of homosexuality.  If that were not enough, gang rape was on the mind of these wicked, wicked men.  Sex between a man and wife is a beautiful thing.  All of us are here because our parents engaged in this activity.  Perverted sex is just that; PERVERTED!!! Those who say homosexuality, bestiality, and things like it are acceptable should read the Bible to learn that they are wrong!!!!!  These things are unacceptable, no matter what the news agencies tell us, or what some politician may say or what law someone may pass.  God has ordained sex, but NOT PERVERTED SEX!!!  To do something other than what has been authorized is to fight against GOD!!!  SEX may attract interest, but obedience to the will of God will help you ultimately arrive in heaven.  You decide which is more important!!!

Fit for a king

This car reminds me of the "Excalibur" or perhaps one of those fancy cars from the 20's (perhaps a Duisburg?).  One thing I don't recall seeing was a luxury car like this with a tandem axle in the rear.  So, this car is an unanswered puzzle to me.  If anyone knows its identity, please contact me as I obviously need to be educated.  One thing is for sure, its opulent and obviously cost a great deal of money.  When I think of wealth, I naturally think of Solomon and although he many things, for some reason, his magnificent throne comes to mind...

WEB: I Kings Chapter 10

[18] Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the finest gold. [19] There were six steps to the throne, and the top of the throne was round behind; and there were stays on either side by the place of the seat, and two lions standing beside the stays. [20] Twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other on the six steps: there was nothing like it made in any kingdom.

Can you imagine the impression such a royal seat would make?  It must have been worth an enormous amount of money.  Such a fantastic it must have been to see Solomon on his throne; so awe inspiring that I can't even imagine sitting on it.  But, I can imagine sitting in that car wearing the Lion ring I usually wear and that will have to be good enough.

Something new

I've been around for awhile, but I have never, ever thought of a sandwich like this! What would you call this, A breakfast burger???  Next time I feel adventurous, I will have to try this one; although my wife might object to all the cholesterol. To me, this is just one more example that even in my age of retirement, there are new things out there; ideas that fascinate me and arise in me a spirit of curiosity like when I was a kid on the farm.  Which brings me to memory of a group of people who were always looking for something new, something exciting to consider.  Lets read for awhile from the book of Acts...

Its hard for most of us to imagine the world of the first century.  Life was unbelievably hard for most, but pleasant for a few (wait a minute, that sounds like today).  Well, polytheism was different anyway.  There was a god for everything; they reflected the nature of human beings in all aspects, but were immensely powerful (or so people thought).  Paul introduced a new concept;one and only one God.  Perhaps most of them could understand a god they just didn't know about, but life after death was a bit much for most of them.  However, some did believe; some took in Paul's message and followed him.  People after my own heart, seekers; willing to try new things and expand the horizon of their understanding.  I can't help but wonder, though, how they would have responded to a hamburger breakfast sandwich???

Your inheritance

The Lion king; now there is something to remember.  A classic tale told in terms that even the young can understand.  The "King" of beasts showing his child the magnitude of what he will inherit.  Priceless!  As soon as I saw this, I asked myself: What then is the inheritance of a Christian?  After some thought, this chapter from the book of Ephesians came to mind...

World English Bible: Ephesians Chapter 1

[1] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God,

to the saints who are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus: [2] Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ; [4] even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without blemish before him in love; [5] having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, [6] to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely bestowed favor on us in the Beloved, [7] in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, [8] which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, [9] making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him [10] to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him; [11] in whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his will; [12] to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ: [13] in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, [14] who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory. [15] For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints, [16] don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, [17] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; [18] having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, [19] and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might [20] which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, [21] far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come. [22] He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly, [23] which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

It has become fashionable to put down Christianity today, to relegate it as something that only the unlearned and foolish believe.  To say that it is worthless and a waste of time and many things than are far worse than these brief statements.  But, those who say such things are devoid of understanding.  All that which is truly good; the foundation of our entire society, comes from God.  This life may afford some blessings to all, but they are temporal.  They begin to fade as we age.  Some day, we will die and those who refuse to address the issue or say it is meaningless delude themselves.  At this point, I say it is best to just let Ephesians chapter one speak for itself.  Please read and reread it a couple of times.  The blessings that God gives us spiritually far outweigh the scope of anything that the light touches.  More than even our imagination can consider.  Just one more thing... and its given to Christians!!!

Snowflakes, paradoxes and Jesus

Unless they perfect cloning, there will never be another "me".  I am glad of that because if everyone were all alike, how boring the world would be.  We actually need the differences in others to compliment ourselves.  Yes, we need other people!!!  Let us not forget though, how special each one of us is.  We were all born in different places at different points in history and have been subject to different experiences.  And we react to them differently as well.  In short, we ARE INDIVIDUALS.  Yet, at the same time we are all generically the same.  paradoxical, isn't it?  So much of life is like that; we know so much but understand so little!!!  However, there was one who was really different, you know him by the name Jesus.  This chapter from the book of John tells us something of this very special "snowflake".

WEB: John Chapter 1

[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] The same was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made. [4] In him was life, and the life was the light of men. [5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it. [6] There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John. [7] The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. [8] He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light. [9] The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.

[10] He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him. [11] He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. [12] But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: [13] who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. [14] The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. [15] John testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’” [16] From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. [17] For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. [18] No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

I know of no other religion where God actually became a human being and sacrificed himself for his own creation.  To understand this concept is the beginning of understanding Christianity!!!  One God, one way to heaven; not the myriad of solutions that we mere humans invent.  Want proof?  Really need proof? Consider that the biggest problem we have is death.  Jesus overcame that!  Not enough proof?  Ask yourself, "who really loves me enough to die for me?"  Let me guess... pretty short list, isn't it?  Perhaps some of the people on your list might change their mind at the last minute or die before they could help you or go on a trip or something.  Now, cross off all the people on your list that these things could happen to and you will be left without a list.  Jesus died for me.  Jesus IS MY LIST, PERIOD!!!!  Jesus really did do what the Bible said he did; 1st Corinthians fifteen says there were five hundred witnesses to his resurrection and frankly that is more than enough for my skeptical mind.  How can five hundred people all be wrong?  Why weren't they immediately refuted if they were wrong?  The answer is simple, THEY WERE RIGHT!!!!!  Yes, we are unique; yes were are also all alike and yes we have hope through the sacrifice of a Jew named Jesus some two thousand years ago.  That is the cold, hard truth and at the same time a warm wonderful thing as well.  Here we go again, another paradox!!!  Relax, not all paradoxes are equal; this one happens to be the good kind.  Bye, for now... from your friendly snowflake...

A topic worth thinking about...Gary

Life with a conscience...

Imagine be allowed to propel your car at this speed, legally?  Would you even want to?  Would it be safe?  Would it be prudent?  Operation of a motor vehicle at a much lower speed than the posted speed limit can actually get you a ticket for driving too slowly. Would you break the law by only going, say 50 or 60 mph?  How do we react to law and what do we do about it?  As I mentioned yesterday, I have been reading about Hitler and the causes of the second world war.  Its fascinating to me that he gained power legitimately and the people obeyed whatever laws were enacted.  Let me say that again... the people obeyed whatever laws were enacted!!!  Which naturally raises the question: What if the powers that be required you to do something that was obviously contrary to the word of God?  Most of the German people under The Third Reich blindly obeyed any enacted law and millions of non-Aryan people died. But what about those who follow Jesus, the Christ?  Can we do just anything and everything that those in power tell us to do?  The answer is found within the book of Acts, chapter five...

WEB: Acts Chapter 5

[12] By the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. They were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. [13] None of the rest dared to join them, however the people honored them. [14] More believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women. [15] They even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mattresses, so that as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some of them. [16] Multitudes also came together from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing sick people, and those who were tormented by unclean spirits: and they were all healed.

[17] But the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy, [18] and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public custody. [19] But an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night, and brought them out, and said, [20] “Go stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.”

[21] When they heard this, they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and those who were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. [22] But the officers who came didn’t find them in the prison. They returned and reported, [23] “We found the prison shut and locked, and the guards standing before the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside!”

[24] Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were very perplexed about them and what might become of this. [25] One came and told them, “Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people.” [26] Then the captain went with the officers, and brought them without violence, for they were afraid that the people might stone them.

[27] When they had brought them, they set them before the council. The high priest questioned them, [28] saying, “Didn’t we strictly command you not to teach in this name? Behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood on us.”
[29] But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. [30] The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed, hanging him on a tree. [31] God exalted him with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins. [32] We are His witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

[33] But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and determined to kill them. [34] But one stood up in the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, honored by all the people, and commanded to put the apostles out for a little while. [35] He said to them, “You men of Israel, be careful concerning these men, what you are about to do. [36] For before these days Theudas rose up, making himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nothing. [37] After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the enrollment, and drew away some people after him. He also perished, and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad. [38] Now I tell you, withdraw from these men, and leave them alone. For if this counsel or this work is of men, it will be overthrown. [39] But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it, and you would be found even to be fighting against God!”

[40] They agreed with him. Summoning the apostles, they beat them and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

The apostles had a choice; do what was plainly the will of God or do what the religious authorities of the day told them to do.  They chose God and suffered for it.  But, they followed their conscience and OBEYED GOD.  Throughout history Christians have had to make tough choices; in the first three centuries, if you disobeyed the will of Caesar and openly worshiped Jesus, you could be put to death for it and probably a horrible death at that.  Okay, that was a long time ago, but what about today?  Well, there are many countries on this green Earth, that forbid Christianity.  You can die in these places for being faithful to Jesus.  So, the topic is relevant and thought provoking, even to this very day.  Think about this, the next time you are told to do something that bothers you.  Think this is ONLY about a 100 mph sign limit?  In America, if a minor becomes pregnant and her family tries to force her to have an abortion; what would YOU advise her to do?  Remember, thou shalt not kill?????????

Philosophers all...

Over the past few months I have been reading about Adolph Hitler, as I have been interested in "The Third Reich" and the causes of the second world war.  So, when I saw Nietzsche on this little sign it peaked my interest.  Then when I saw "Kant" and finally "Sinatra", I chucked.  I kept asking myself what Sinatra (the famous singer of the 40's and 50's etc.) had to do with these two famous philosophers..??  Then, I saw it and laughed out loud this time. Nietzsche emphasized man, his ascendancy, his superiority over everything (humm, remember "God is dead" and the "superman" of the National Socialist Party???).  Kant (if you can get by the complexity of his thought processes in the Metaphysics of Reason) emphasized the analytical characteristics of the mind.  And then we come to that great "philosopher" Frank Sinatra.  I was never fortunate enough to have met him, but he left his mark on society through the songs he sang.  His crooning affected millions upon millions of people and something inside all of us will never quite be the same again.  Michael Bluble' has recently done a lot to revitalize interest in the songs of that era, so once again the work of "old blue eyes" is current.  Right about now you are probably asking yourself:"what all this has to do with the Scriptures"? Consider, for a moment, all the religious error that has occurred because we do not understand God??? Humanists emphasize mankind, great theologians make complex analysis of God (using their great minds) and the world is just interested in what makes them happy.  Each is fine, but quite wrong.  And so, we come to the Scriptures...

WEB: I Thessalonians 5:23.
May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

WEB: Genesis Chapter 1
[26] God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” [27] God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

WEB: Jeremiah Chapter 31
[31] Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: [32] not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh. [33] But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: [34] and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh; for they shall all know me, from their least to their greatest, says Yahweh: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

Three seemingly unrelated scriptures, yet together, they form something very interesting.  Human beings are made in the image of God, in other words, they reflect his makeup.  They are body, soul and spirit.  And if we are to know God, we should look at ourselves.  Jeremiah says that "...they shall all know me".  I wonder, does this mean even someone who is very young or aged or how about the slow of mind???  Of course it does.  We know God through the complex nature of our makeup.  Our understanding of God should be balanced according to our design.  Mental, emotional and spiritual understand should be used together as a "composite" to achieve a true picture of God.  Therefore everyone has the capacity to "know" God.  God is available for us ALL!!!  You don't have to be a genius like Nietzsche or Kant to understand the almighty or to reason intelligently, you just need to be yourself and seek him.  Start with learning the Scriptures, applying them and letting Jesus mold your heart.  You will do just fine, remember, be yourself and let God do the rest.  So, we come to Frank Sinatra and the great wisdom of "do be do be do".  Anybody out there feel like singing...???
