From Gary... Have your passport ready!!!

Ask a 5 year old what they want and you might get a request for a toy. Talk to a teen and they might wish for someone to go steady with. An adult might want to just get their kids to behave or have enough money to pay the bills. But, ask an old person what they want, and they might just say "I just want to make it into heaven"!  The problem is- how do we get there?  Its not just by being good, for I have known a number of non-Christians who exhibited love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. And yet, they claim no allegiance to Jesus- so what difference does Jesus make, anyway?

Galatians, Chapter 5 (WEB)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.  25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.

The difference is belonging to Jesus (who is The Christ of God) and living by the Spirit.

But, how does this happen?   Read on...

Ephesians, Chapter 1 (WEB)
3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ;  4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love; 5 having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,  6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely bestowed favor on us in the Beloved,  7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,  8 which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,  9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him  10 to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him;  11 in whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his will; 12 to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ:  13 in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,  14 who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory

Titus, Chapter 3 (WEB)
3 For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.  4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared,  5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; 7 that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

We are saved, not by some work that we do, but by the "washing of regeneration" and "renewing by the Holy Spirit". What does this mean? Jesus said...

John, Chapter 3 (WEB)

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.  2 The same came to him by night, and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

3  Jesus answered him, Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see the Kingdom of God.”

4  Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

5  Jesus answered, Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into the Kingdom of God  6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.   7  Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’   8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9  Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”

10  Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?   11  Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.   12  If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?   13  No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.   14  As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,   15  that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.   16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

It is a new life- like being born. A spiritual life, where sins are washed away and the Spirit "renews" us. OK, you might say- "I believe in God, isn't that enough?" Well, no.  And the proof of it is in the response of those who heard the first sermon of Acts, Chapter 2. They were baptized for forgiveness of sins and were given the Holy Spirit as a gift.  See below...

Acts, Chapter 2 (WEB)

36  “Let all the house of Israel therefore know certainly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

37  Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

38  Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  39 For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”  40 With many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”

41  Then those who gladly received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls.  42 They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.  43 Fear came on every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.  44 All who believed were together, and had all things in common.  45 They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need.  46 Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart,  47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved

There is no literal passport to heaven; instead, we have a relationship with Jesus as our savior (from sin) and being sealed with the Holy Spirit. We are born again- of the water and the Spirit.

God knows our hearts and why we do the things we do. He will judge as HE sees fit.  Remember this one passage from Isaiah...

Isaiah, Chapter 55 (WEB)
7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” says Yahweh.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 For as the rain comes down and the snow from the sky,
and doesn’t return there, but waters the earth,
and makes it grow and bud,
and gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
11 so shall my word be that goes out of my mouth:
it shall not return to me void,
but it shall accomplish that which I please,
and it shall prosper in the thing I sent it to do.

Believe in God, obey him from the heart and be "born again". Live a Godly life now and continue doing it forever. A paper passport is NOT NEEDED!!!
